Cultural Analysis #1 Period 5

The song "Rag and Bone" by The White Stripes depicts the problem of waste, which is constantly becoming an issue today. The song's message helps show the audience that many people today throw things away that could be repaired or given away. "Rag and Bone" clearly goes against the American ideology that we should throw away things that we don't want anymore.

The beginning of the song starts off with the two band members, Meg and Jack, going around asking people for stuff they don't want. They both say that there is nothing that they wouldn't take, good condition or bad. They both reveal their excitement during their attempts to collect junk. At one point in the song, Meg stops during their search to ask Jack if they could go ask some people for stuff she saw, but he responds to her that there are many other places for them to search.

The song clearly demonstrates that one man's trash is another man's treasure. The song shows this message by constantly repeating phrases like, "come on and give it to me." It also shows this by making the setting of the song a scene where the band goes around asking for junk. In one part of the song Jack says, "anybody got a Christmas tree, can you part with a toilet seat?" These lyrics help the audience get to know the variety of things that people might want.
